Abstract:
Genetic and breeding research usually rest on the sound information of cytological studies and quantitative analysis of the characters of interest. Extensive works have been done by many investigators to study the cytology regarding the basic number of chromosomes of different cultivated and wild species, varieties and cultivars of Capsicum. Although a great deal of work has been done on the cytology of different cultivated and wild species, varieties and cultivars of Capsicum but the reports on cytology of intercultivar, intervarietal and interspecific crosses on this crop are inadequate (Pickersgill, 1971 and Nair and George, 1975). Further, information on quantitative characters and correlation between yield_ and cytological characters of Capsicum is also meagre. However, review of literatures are described below under two separate heads, viz. A. Cytological studies and B. Genetical studies.
